From 6 April 2024, it became law for all businesses, charities and public sector organisations to sort their waste for recycling.

The following materials will need to be separated for collection and collected separately:

Metal, plastic and cartons

Paper and card

Glass

Food

Unsold small waste electrical and electronic equipment (sWEEE)

Unsold textiles

This law applies to all businesses, charities and public sector organisations operating in Wales.

Workplaces and business will be issued a fixed monetary penalty (FMP) of between £300 and £500 if any breaches are proven. Audits will be taking place by NRW at all businesses across Wales.

Have a look at what’s in your bins to assess the types and amounts of waste you produce on a daily and weekly basis

Look for any ways to reduce how much waste your organisation produces. This could be through reusing materials or adapting processes to be more efficient

Speak to your current waste collector to ensure they can collect and recycle your separated waste. If they can’t then talk to us, and see if we operate in your area. You can get a quote here.

Your audit results and waste provider should highlight the bins you need. Make sure these are in an easy accessible place for all staff and ALWAYS place these next to a refuse bin to prevent unwanted contamination.

Explain to your staff about the new law and make sure all staff are using your new recycling bins correctly.

Enjoy a sense of smugness, knowing that you are fully compliant, your waste is sorted, and it will soon be making its way to a reprocessor to be turned into something new!
