Where it all goes

Have you ever wondered where your recycling goes after being collected?

Where it all goes

Where your materials go

Cardboard

Cardboard is sent to Newport Recycling in Shropshire who send it to a plant in Belgium where it is sorted into different cardboard grades. This then recycled into new cardboard items from egg cartons to new boxes and even toilet paper

Newport Recycling

Plastic

Sent to Jayplas in Loughborough where the plastic bottles and food packaging are washed, sorted and graded using high tech machines, and then turned into plastic pellets for use in the production of food packaging and other plastic products.

Jayplas

Steel

Sent to EMR in the West Midlands where it is processed before being sold for re-purpose, much of it back into South Wales industried.

EMR Group

Aluminium

Sent to Novelis in Warrington who recycle the aluminum for use in the automotive industries, and aerospace industries as well as being turned back into aluminium cans.

Novelis

Glass

Glass is sent to Recresco in Cwmbran, where they sort the glass by colour using optical sorters and turn it into cullet. This glass cullet is then used to make new glass bottles and jars, using much less energy than if glass was made from virgin silica.

Recresco

Food

Food waste is sent to Biogen in Bryn Pica, Aberdare. This is an anaerobic digestion plant which turns the waste food into a ‘soup’ in sealed tanks. This degrades without oxygen releasing gases, primarily methane, which is then used to create heat and power. What is left from the process is a nutrient rich fertiliser and then used on farmland instead of industrial fertilisers.

Clothes and Shoes

Clothes and shoes are sent to JMP Wilcox, based in the Midlands. Clothes are then sorted and graded with 90% of clothes sent going to Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe. The remaining 10% of these textiles which are considered not fit for reuse, are made into industrial wiping products, flock rags or mixed felt material in the UK.
