Reuse and borrowing come together in Aberdare

Aberdare, we bring you "The library of things"

Welsh reuse and repair trailblazers Wastesavers Charitable Trust Ltd. and Benthyg Cymru are joining forces in Aberdare to bring their expertise in reuse and borrowing together for the first time.

With communities around Wales embracing a more sustainable lifestyle which also saves them money, this will give the people of Aberdare the chance to try borrowing stuff alongside picking up the bargains to be had at the Aberdare Shed.

Benthyg Cymru has been supporting communities to set up a network of ‘Libraries of Things’ – places where people can donate stuff they own but don’t need and borrow things they need but don’t own.  Enthusiasm for this concept has escalated quickly in the last couple of years as people are looking for easy ways to live more sustainably and save money in the process.

With 20 locations now open across the country and more in the pipeline, Wales’ Library of Things network has recorded 13,000 borrows since April 2021, saving communities an estimated £300k and 160,000 in the process.  Popular items include pressure washers, tents, carpet cleaners and gardening equipment.
