Triple Bottom Line

Wastesavers work to a triple bottom line, which means social, environmental and financial performance are of equal importance to us.

Our Social Value at Wastesavers

Wastesavers operate as a social enterprise providing environmental, social and economic benefits to the communities and all stakeholders we work with – also known as the ‘Triple Bottom Line’.

Triple Bottom Line

Wastesavers work to a triple bottom line; That means the environment, people and finances are all of equal importance to us. In everything we do we ensure that the environment is a priority (I mean, it is why we do what we do!). So are people – our staff and volunteers, our community and stakeholders. All while ensuring we make enough money to pay wages, ensure we can put fuel in our trucks and keep our recycling plant operating.

Last year we became a real living wage employer, our charity gained its ‘Investing in Volunteers’ quality mark and we took further steps to make our company a great place to work for staff. All whilst diverting 22,000 tonnes of material from landfill or incineration (that’s about 13,750 family cars or about 4,075 African elephants).

Triple Bottom Line

Our work has a positive impact in the communities we serve;

1

We train and develop people through our volunteer programme, providing a safe and welcoming environment for all that both increases social inclusion and employment opportunities

2

We work with local schools and agencies to ensure access to opportunities to those children who prosper outside mainstream education

3

We seek to improve staff and volunteer wellbeing and recognise the importance of healthy and stimulated minds

4

We measure and report on our social value impact annually

Economic Impact

1

We are a Living Wage employer

2

We aim to recruit people who are local to our shops and projects

3

Where possible we spend in the ‘local’ supply chain and utilise other charities and social enterprises for services

4

Through our staff volunteer programme, we donate voluntary hours to support other local charities and causes

5

Since April 2021 we have donated over £12,000* reuse value worth of items to 196 households in need

6

Since April 2021 we have donated over £31,000 reuse value worth of IT equipment to those who were previously digitally excluded made up of over 300 items.

Environmental Impact

1

In 2022/23 our Reuse operations created 1000 tonnes of landfill avoidance with over 500,000 items not going to disposal. Our recycling operations diverted over 22,000 tonnes from disposal.

2

We maximise the level of furniture, household and IT reuse we achieve (our IT facility achieved 100% landfill avoidance last year)

3

We seek to reduce our consumption of energy renewable energy resources where possible with solar panels at our Head Office and flagship Reuse Centre in Newport

4

We facilitate hybrid working in order to reduce staff travel

5

We educate school children and local community groups about the importance of the circular economy and the impact they can have on their environment
