Wastesavers is a third sector group that offers a range of recycling, reuse and education services in South Wales. We are an environmental organisation whose aims are to reduce the amount of material going to waste and to benefit the local communities of South Wales. We currently run the kerbside recycling for Newport, as well as commercial recycling services to business across South East Wales. We operate 10 reuse shops at council recycling centres, in town centres and on retail estates, as well as IT recycling, a nappy library, PEAK alternative education provision and a comprehensive volunteering programme.
Job Role:
Charities and their volunteer trustees play an increasingly important and influential role in the economic, social and governmental development of their locality. Wastesavers Limited and Wastesavers Charitable Trust Limited (“Wastesavers”) is seeking new trustees to join them at an enormously exciting time.
Wastesavers is a charity and a social enterprise. This means we run our operations like a normal business but our reason for existing is to help the environment, educate and work with people to improve human well-being rather than maximizing profits. Profits are important, we use those profits to re-invest in our businesses and people and also to demonstrate how social enterprise can be a significantly effective business model.
The organisation is run along two distinct operations.
We have a focussed, active and vibrant volunteer board that has an active role in overseeing the running of Wastesavers. We now seek additional trustees that are able to contribute for at least three years to our future development.
The board meets monthly (mostly online) where we review the financials, activity against targets, approve large scale expenditure and discuss items of significance. The board sets the direction and tone of the organisation, and the Chief Executive Officer is responsible for delivering the boards strategic direction. Wastesavers have over 100 unpaid volunteers contributing their time and expertise throughout the organisations and 130 paid staff work who on the kerbside collection operation and throughout our retail shops. Management time is shared across the enterprises.
We welcome individuals with a variety of experiences and those new to the role of a Trustee are especially welcome. Your involvement will enable you to understand how a multi-million pound company operates and gain valuable experience in areas such as governance, business planning, compliance, IT, security and, critically help shape the environmental and social future of our planet.
We are an influential, successful widely admired and progressive enterprise that has bold ambition. If you bring enthusiasm, commitment and a wish to help others, then we should have a conversation. Expertise is always welcome but with passion and commitment and a relevant knowledge base we can start to chat. Students to retirees, we all have something significant to share and contribute. If this sparks an interest, send an email to penny@wastesavers.co.uk and we promise a warm response.
Training is available for Trustees who feel they have a gap in their skills or knowledge. The board regularly reviews their own development needs to ensure they stay up to date with the requirements of the role.
We welcome applications from women, people from an ethnic minority and those aged between 18 – 50, who are under represented on our board. We are also keen to encourage people from the areas of Rhondda Cynon Taff, Merthyr Tydfil CBC, Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen to apply to ensure we are representative of the communities we serve.
