What is Reuse

Reuse is the act of using something again and again and again… Learn more about our Reuse projects here.

What is reuse?

The practice of Reuse has great benefits for our planet and society.

By reusing products and items we reduce our consumption and use of raw materials, which in turn reduces carbon emissions.

It also can significantly reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and for incineration.

As a charity we also ensure items are made available to those in need of basic household items and help to reduce furniture poverty.

Waste Hierarchy

Reuse is high up the waste hierarchy

The waste hierarchy is a simple ranking system used for the different waste management options according to which is the best for the environment. The most preferred option is to prevent waste, and the least preferred choice is disposal in landfill sites.

Landfill Avoidance

In 2022/23 our Reuse operations diverted over 1000 tonnes from landfill, made up from over 500,000 items. Here is our for 2023/24 so far based on items diverted:

Circular Economy

Understanding the Circular Economy

Reuse is also a major contributor to the Circular Economy, a relatively new term, which for Reuse can be described as, ‘Products being kept in use for as long as possible, through repairing, recycling and redesign – so they can be used again and again.’ and, ‘At the end of a product’s life, the materials used to make it are kept in the economy and reused wherever possible’, eg, fabrics made from recycled plastic.

Creating a dynamic and robust Circular Economy requires a collaborative approach and Wastesavers partner with several organisations to help the sector thrive:
