Assessment Guidelines

Items that are regulated for reuse are as follows:

Assessment guidelines

Fire Labels

As a retailer, we have responsibilities for ensuring compliance with the Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (amended 1989 and 1993).

These apply to:

  • All types of upholstered seating including chairs, settees, padded stools and ottomans, children’s furniture,
  • Footstools, sofa beds and other convertibles, bean bags and floor cushions
  • Nursery furniture and upholstered items designed to contain a baby or small child
  • Domestic upholstered furniture that is supplied in kit form for self-assembly
  • Second-hand furniture
  • Upholstered headboards, footboards and side rails of beds

Assessment guidelines

Candles

Candles must not be sold without warnings for use on them, such as the label detailed here.

Assessment guidelines

Bunk Beds and Cots

Regulations prohibit the supply of bunk beds or cots which could cause a child to be injured or killed, because of them becoming wedged or trapped.

A bunk bed must not have any:

  • gap in the bed base greater than 75mm (approx. 3”)
  • gap elsewhere which is less than 60mm (approx. 2.5”) or more than 75mm

Assessment guidelines

Safety Glass

Many items of furniture contain glass, for example, tables, trolleys, mirrors and units with glass doors or shelves. Depending on its size and means of support within the furniture, the glass must be of a thickness and type (often toughened or laminated safety glass) to ensure that the item can be used safely, and to minimise the extent of injury in case of an accident.

The requirements are detailed and are laid down in the following safety standards:-

  • Tables and trolleys – BS 7376 :1990
  • Other furniture containing glass – BS 7449 : 1991

Gift Aid

Want to make a donation through Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a scheme available to charities and Community Amateur Sports Clubs (CASCs). It means they can claim extra money from HMRC.

The charity or CASC can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you donate. That’s as long as you’ve paid the basic rate of tax and make the donation from your own funds. That means Gift Aid can increase the value of your donations by 25%, so you can give even more to the causes you care about.

Gift Aid is important for charities, and means millions of pounds extra go to the charity sector. Each time an eligible tax payer donates and forgets to tick the Gift Aid box, the charity misses out.

If you are a taxpayer you can register for Gift Aid at our shops, and you only have to do this once.
